In a medium-sized Welsh industrial town a group of children were selected with irregular school attendance between 1946 and 1952 who were not withheld from school (stage 1); by intensive personal psychological and sociological examinations a more representative group of 40 truants was selected (stage 2). This group was then compared with 40 non-truants attending two child guidance centres (one in Wales ans one in England) (stage 3). The children were matched for age, sex, and township.
